The VIEW utility enables files with certain extensions to be viewed on the screen. This program is particularly useful to quickly check totals on reports, scroll through a document for specific information, or locate errors before the file is printed. At times, VIEW can serve as an alternative to printing the document.

In addition, you can perform searches within the document, save portions of the text to a different file name, and move easily through the document using the designated keys.

Only those files with the .TXT, .LIS, .DOC, .RPT, .LPT, and .PRT extensions are available to view. However, your A-site can customize which extensions are available. When you enter the program, a list of files that are in your directory and have the appropriate extensions is displayed.

Getting Started

The VIEW program must be run from the MENU.

For example:

Code Block

     Menu>  OECN <CR>
     Menu>  VIEW <CR>

To run the VIEW utility from the $ prompt, type:

Code Block

     $ MENU VIEW <CR>

The system lists the files that are available in your directory with the appropriate extensions.

Code Block

     Directory of Available Files

     LETTERS.LIS
     REPORT.DOC
     JOB_DESCRIPTION.TXT
     NAMES.TXT
     PHONE_LIST.TXT

Use the arrow keys to position the cursor in front of the file you wish to view and press [Select] or [KP9] (the number nine on the keypad).

Alternatively, if you already know the name of the file you want to view, you can type the name of the file after the VIEW command. The following demonstrates how a user can directly access a file:

Code Block

     Menu> VIEW PHONE_LIST.TXT <CR>

          or

     $ MENU VIEW PHONE_LIST.TXT <CR>
